The South Main historic District in Covington is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as designated by the United States Department of the Interior National Park Service. Seventy-five structures are located in the South Main Historic District including one commercial building, forty-seven residences, twenty-six out buildings and one church. The majority of the commercial and residential buildings retain their integrity and reflect the stages of growth and development of Covington during the late 1800's and early 1900's.

The houses in the district reflect the mainstream architectural styles that were sought by the emerging affluent members of Covington's society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These styles include Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Greek Revival, Neoclassical, French Colonial, Craftsman, bungalow, Stick Style and American Foursquare.
